Politics, economics, and other mental flotsam from the mind of Joseph R. Jones

Starting 2009 on the right foot

Dec-182008

Those who know me best know that I'm a personal productivity junkie—that's not what this site is going to be about, but I'm sure that the jrjWiki will wind up having some good resources over time. Like many people, every year I go through a process of developing new-year's resolutions… but I also go through and tweak all my personal productivity systems, and do a full sweep of guiding principles, personal mission, roles, and goals in a manner similar to that described in Stephen Covey's landmark "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and David Allen's upcoming sequel to "Getting Things Done" and "Ready for Anything," called "Making it All Work."

For 2009, I decided to publish the majority of my plans, partially to use my readers as a motivational tool—it's harder to fall off the wagon if you've increased the visibility of what you're trying to do.

Obviously, for confidentiality reasons, I can't share most of my work-related goals, and a couple of things will be redacted for personal privacy as well. Still, I expect this to be an incredibly transparent process. What you'll see below is a rough first draft of my plans, but you can see the latest, including detailed information on my ongoing progress, on the 2009 Recalibration site.

Personal Mission

  • Be a loving and supportive husband who provides for his family no matter what the situation.
  • Develop and nurture high quality relationships with family, friends, and colleagues through personal integrity, open and supportive communication, and generosity.
  • Embrace intellectual curiosity as a lifetime learner open to new ideas, yet skeptical and disciplined in testing assumptions.
  • Demonstrate consistent excellence in professional endeavors, and improve the skills and efficacy of my team and myself.
  • Continually push forward the state of the art in technology through continual innovation and unyielding passion and drive.

Can you provide a little more context on the "7 habits" stuff for those of us who haven't read the book?

My apologies-- I tend to assume everyone has read that one. In a future post I'll provide a high-level overview of the book and its concetps.
